What will you be financing?

Quinta do Alfeijoal has installed Portugal's first super-intensive organic olive grove.

This campaign aims to finance agricultural operations such as pruning the olive trees (43,000 in all), tying the stakes, and harvesting. The harvest is done manually, but the promoter is implementing automation processes.

Quinta do Alfeijoal intends to continue to develop and optimize its Organic Production, creating a resilient and circular ecosystem. The promotor's strategic commercial focus is to export organic and conventional Portuguese agricultural products to large distribution chains in Nordic countries, complementing olive oil with wines and cheeses.

Olive trees naturally go into dormancy during periods of low temperatures, beginning in October and awakening again in the spring. Pruning and binding during this period of their cycle allows the trees to thrive in the following period, sustaining flowering where olives are generated. Ideally, the next harvest will be the first mechanized one.

The Minister of Agriculture and Food inaugurated the olive grove in April 2022. It was referred to as an example of organic production that combines sustainability techniques, different agricultural practices, and energy autonomy, obtaining greater profitability than conventional agriculture.

What is the impact?

Direct:
  • Promotion of organic farming: Quinta do Alfeijoal uses the Organic Production Mode in its olive grove. This sustainable and resilient food production system will be capable of an average production of 5 tons of olives per hectare in 2023, equivalent to 190 tons in 38 hectares. Considering 15% slinging, which translates into the oil squeezed/extracted from the olives, equals 28,500 liters of organic olive oil produced.
  • Decent work: the promoter controls the suppliers of the temporary teams so that they have humane working conditions and fair pay.

Indirect:

  • Use of renewable energy and promotion of the decarbonization of the economy: part of the energy consumed in the pumps are powered by the 30Kw solar panels installed.
  • Conscious consumption and production: the pruning residues are used to promote organic matter in the plantation, and there is careful management of the efficient use of water through advanced control techniques.
  • Sustainable soil management: through sowing techniques between the rows of the olive grove and the three annual grass cuts, the generation of organic matter is promoted, contributing to the fertilization and resilience of the soil.
  • Promotion of learning for sustainable development: Through a partnership with the Agrarian School of Santarém, annually, the farm receives two trainees, with support in the costs, for practical field experience. In this way, it promotes the dissemination of knowledge and skills related to the organic production of food, promoting sustainable development.
